What is the treatment process?

After our oncologists have determined you are suitable for treatment, your Treatment Coordinator will invite you to our centre for a consultation. They will let you know at this stage the number of fractions (treatment sessions) you are likely to be suitable for and this will be confirmed based on the scans you will have at our centre, should you decide to proceed. You will also be advised of the treatment cost at this stage before you have made your decision to travel to Prague. Should you choose to accept our invitation, you will have an one-hour consultation with one of our radiation oncologists, who will go through your medical history with you, explain what you can expect and answer any questions you may have. After the consultation, most people will go home to think about whether they would like to proceed with treatment. Your Treatment Coordinator will be in touch with you about going ahead with the treatment, and if you are happy to do so we will schedule your treatment planning. This takes 1 to 3 days, depending on your diagnosis, and consists of a blood test, an MRI and CT scan, and in the case of prostate cancer, the insertion of fiducial markers. After treatment planning, our physics team requires one week to create your treatment plan, after this, your treatment can begin. During treatment you will come to the centre every weekday, or every second day in some cases. You will have regular appointments with a doctor throughout the treatment, and depending on your diagnosis you may also have regular appointments with a specialist.
